Ever wonder why we’re all obsessed with names? It’s not just about flexing unique tags or flexing cool titles. Names shape our vibes, set the scene, and can even determine our fate. From brands that pop off on social media to movies that slay the box office, or even courses that make you want to hit that ‘enrol’ button ASAP—names are the real MVPs. In a world where a name can literally make or break a brand, let’s dive into why those sweet titles and handles matter so much. Ready to decode the name game? Let’s get into it!

Let’s kick it off with my name. If you’re familiar with India, you know how my name is pretty much a classic—like, there are literally countless people with the same name. In every class, whether in school or college, I was just another S1 or S2. Seriously, it was such a mood-killer. Everyone had a story about another S or compared me to yet another S. It felt like I was lost in a sea of identical names.

So, when it came to naming my kids, I was determined to switch things up. I gave them names that were anything but basic. And guess what? It totally paid off. Their unique names instantly caught people’s attention, sparking conversations and making new connections a breeze. It was like an instant icebreaker that helped them stand out and build their social circles. Et c’était l’idée!

When it comes to naming brands or companies, the name is more than just a label—it's the first impression, a slice of culture, and a glimpse into the company's identity. A great example is Microsoft, which is a mash-up of "microcomputer" and "software." When Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded the company in 1975, they wanted a name that was catchy and clearly reflected their mission to develop software for microcomputers. The name Microsoft not only encapsulated their vision but also became synonymous with personal computing and innovation.

Amazon is another standout. Jeff Bezos originally named his online bookstore Cadabra, but after a lawyer misheard it as "cadaver," he decided a change was needed. He chose "Amazon" for its connotations of vastness—much like the Amazon River, the world's largest river. Bezos wanted the name to suggest that his company was equally expansive in scope, aiming to be the largest bookstore (and eventually, the largest everything store) on the internet. The name also had the added benefit of placing the company early in alphabetical listings, which was a clever nod to getting ahead in the digital directory age.

These names reflect more than just their businesses—they represent their aspirations, visions, and strategic thinking. The right name can encapsulate a company's mission, ethos, and ambitions, making it an integral part of its brand identity.

The journey of naming my academy underscores the power of a thoughtful name. Originally, "SoRoBrain" was a blend of my affiliations, but when those associations ended, the name had already established a unique identity and SEO impact. Rather than discarding it, I redefined it as "Self Oriented Realization Of Brain" to align with the academy’s core mission of nurturing individual talents and focusing on personal growth.

This experience highlights why a well-chosen name is crucial. Shakespeare famously wrote, "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." While the sentiment is poetic, in reality, names carry weight and significance. A well-thought-out name can be a powerful ready reckoner, encapsulating a mission, values, and identity in one. It’s not just about creating a catchy label; it’s about crafting a name that resonates with your mission and values, making a memorable impact, and ensuring it continues to serve your brand’s evolution. Whether for a company, a course, or a personal project, investing time in choosing the right name can significantly influence its success and how it’s perceived in the long run.
